Health Insurance Options Beyond the Marketplace

What "Alternative Coverage" Actually Means

Alternative health insurance isn't a single product. It's a category that includes several distinct plan types, each with different rules, costs, and trade-offs. Here's what we typically review for clients who are looking beyond the marketplace:

  • Off-exchange ACA plans: These are the same ACA-compliant plans sold directly through insurance carriers rather than through Connect for Health Colorado. They cover pre-existing conditions and all essential health benefits. They follow the same open enrollment windows as marketplace plans, so they're not a workaround for timing. The difference is that no tax credits apply, which makes them most relevant when you don't qualify for subsidies anyway.
  • Fixed indemnity plans: These plans pay a fixed dollar amount for specific medical events, such as a hospital stay or a doctor visit, rather than covering a percentage of your actual costs. Premiums are typically lower, but they are not ACA-compliant and do not cover pre-existing conditions or essential health benefits the way a major medical plan does.
  • Accident and critical illness supplements: These plans pay a lump sum or scheduled benefit if you experience a qualifying event, such as a serious accident or a diagnosis like cancer or a heart attack. They're designed to layer on top of other coverage, not to replace it.
  • Short-term health plans: Available in some states, these plans provide temporary coverage outside of open enrollment. Colorado has specific regulations governing short-term plans, and availability and terms vary. We'll tell you exactly what's available here.

Every one of these plan types involves real trade-offs. We'll walk you through them plainly before you commit to anything.

The Affordable Care Act marketplace works well for people who qualify for tax credits. But if your income puts you above the subsidy threshold, you're paying full price for a plan you may not have chosen otherwise. That's a real problem, and it's one we hear about often. The good news is that the marketplace isn't your only option.

As an independent brokerage, we compare off-exchange ACA plans and non-ACA alternatives alongside marketplace plans so you can see the full picture before you decide. Some clients end up back on the marketplace. Others find a better fit somewhere else. Either way, you'll know what you're choosing and why.

When the Marketplace Doesn't Work in Your Favor

The Two Situations Where Clients Usually Come to Us

Most people who ask about alternative coverage are dealing with one of two situations.

The first is the subsidy cliff. If your household income exceeds the threshold for premium tax credits, you're paying the full unsubsidized premium for whatever plan you choose. At that income level, a lower-cost non-ACA plan can look appealing. Sometimes it genuinely makes sense. Sometimes the gaps in coverage make it the wrong call. We help you run that comparison honestly.

The second is timing. ACA-compliant plans, whether bought on or off the marketplace, are only available during open enrollment or a qualifying special enrollment period. If you need coverage now and don't have a qualifying life event, non-ACA products like fixed indemnity or accident plans can often start year-round. That flexibility comes with limitations, and we'll explain them clearly.

Trade-Offs You Should Understand Before Deciding

We're not going to oversell alternative coverage, and we're not going to dismiss it either. What we will do is make sure you understand what you're getting.

Non-ACA plans, including fixed indemnity and accident supplements, typically do not cover pre-existing conditions. They may not include essential health benefits like prescription drugs, mental health services, or maternity care. If you have ongoing health needs, a plan that looks affordable on paper can become expensive in practice when it doesn't cover what you actually use.

Off-exchange ACA plans carry none of those gaps. They're fully ACA-compliant. The only meaningful difference from a marketplace plan is that you can't apply tax credits to them, which is exactly why they're worth considering when you don't qualify for credits in the first place.

The right answer depends on your health history, your budget, and how you'd realistically use the coverage. That's what our consultation is for.

  • Does it cost more to use a health insurance broker?

Generally, you don't pay us a separate fee to help you compare and enroll in the plans we represent. Insurance carriers may compensate brokers when an enrollment occurs.

We'll explain our role, review the options available to you, and help you understand what you're considering before you make a decision.

  • How do insurance brokers get paid?

Insurance brokers are commonly compensated by insurance carriers when clients enroll in certain plans. That allows us to help clients review coverage without charging a separate consultation fee in many situations.

If anything about our compensation applies differently to your situation, we'll explain it before you enroll.

  • What's the difference between an insurance broker and an agent?

Some insurance agents represent a single insurance company. Independent brokers can work with multiple carriers.

As an independent brokerage, Lighthouse Group can review plans from the insurance companies we represent and help you compare factors such as premiums, benefits, provider networks, and prescription coverage.

  • Can a broker help me after I enroll?

Yes. Our relationship doesn't have to end when you choose a plan.

We can continue helping with questions about your coverage, renewals, plan changes, and other issues that come up along the way. If something isn't making sense, you have someone you can ask.

  • Why not just buy a plan on my own?

    You absolutely can.

The challenge is that a plan name and monthly premium don't tell you everything. Your doctors, prescriptions, provider network, deductible, and expected healthcare needs can all affect how well a plan works for you.

We help you look beyond the price tag so you can better understand what you're choosing before you enroll.
